Backrooms is a 2023 American supernatural horror comedy film directed by Sean Anders with a screenplay written by Anders and John Morris. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, Jenna Ortega, Rafael Petardi, Ella Purnell, Owen Wilson, Jamie Chung, Kimiko Glenn, and Adam Garcia.

Backrooms is set for release in the United States on October 6, 2023 by Universal Pictures. It received favorable reviews from critics and grossed over $76 million worldwide.

In December 2019, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were announced to be producing an untitled supernatural horror comedy project inspired by the true story, and based on a spec script written by Sean Anders and John Morris. On March 9, 2021, Universal Pictures announced that the film was in development. Pitch Perfect producers Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman for Brownstone Productions, who joined the producing team alongside Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood for Lord Miller Productions, announced to subtitle the film Backrooms. The ensemble cast was revealed between July and August 2021.

Principal photography took place in Atlanta, Georgia, between August 20 and October 17, 2021. Production concluded by December 2021, with a budget turned out to be $40 million. Visual effects were made by Movie Land Digital Production Services, La Femme Rouge VFX, Universal Production Partners, and Crafty Apes, whom created the entities, including Kitty, with CGI.

Music[]

In March 2022, Tom Holkenborg was reported to compose the film score. However, Pinar Toprak replaced him as composer in November 2022, making it his second collaboration with Maximum Effort after Shotgun Wedding (2022).

Release[]

Backrooms is set for release on October 6, 2023 by Universal Pictures. The film is dedicated to Jimmy Buffett, who passed away on September 1, 2023.

Based on 23 professional critic reviews, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 65% of those reviews were positive, with an average rating of 5.9/10. Using a weighted average calculator, Metacritic assigned the film a score of 59 out of 100, based on 22 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.
