Blue Eye Samurai is an American adult animated action streaming television series created and written by husband and wife team Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, and animated by French company Blue Spirit.

Premise

Set in Japan's Edo period (17th century), mixed-race swordsmaster Mizu is on a quest for vengeance.

In 17th century Japan, Mizu, a half-Japanese half-Caucasian woman rejected by Japanese society for being "impure", seeks to avenge herself on four Caucasian smugglers defying the sakoku, one of whom may have been her father; having already killed one of them, she travels disguised as a man. When stopping at a soba tavern, she encounters a flesh-trader with a Western pistol, who she wounds and interrogates, giving her the name of Heiiji Shindo. Ringo, an amiable cook with no hands, follows her from the tavern imploring to become her apprentice, but she rejects him. Princess Akemi, the daughter of a nouveau riche lord, avoids an arranged marriage by convincing her father to marry her to Taigen, a talented samurai of humble origins, who also happens to be Akemi's secret lover. In flashbacks, Mizu is shown to have been disguised as a boy and hidden by her mother until someone burned their hut down, apparently killing her mother. She was bullied by the other children for her appearance, and was nearly killed by the son of a local fisherman (later revealed to have been Taigen) before being rescued by Eiji, a blind blacksmith (dubbed "Swordfather" by her) who raises and trains her as his apprentice. Mizu eventually sets out on a quest of vengeance, to hunt down the four men who could have been her father, whom she sees as the cause of her "monstrous" heritage. She forges herself a sword from ore dug from a meteorite, which she and Eiji found the day they met. In the present, Mizu attacks the Shindo dojo in Kyoto to learn his whereabouts, and in so doing defeats the champion of that dojo, Taigen, after they recognize each other. She learns from the dojo master, Heiji's brother, that Heiji is on an island-fortress, ostensibly guarding Abijah Fowler, one of the Caucasian smugglers. On the fortress, Fowler tells Heiji to send his assassins, the Four Fangs, after Mizu. While Mizu is bathing at an onsen, Ringo catches up with her and is astonished to learn she is a woman.

Reluctantly allowing Ringo to join her so long as he keeps her secret, Mizu arrives at a coastal town, seeking to hire a boat to reach the island-fortress housing Heiji and Fowler, where the two plot a 'surprise' for the Shogun in Edo. In the meantime, Taigen, angry over his defeat by Mizu (who severed his topknot, marking him as disgraced), decides to pursue her on order to obtain his vengeance. As a result of Taigen's defeat, Akemi's father Lord Tokunobu Daiichi, schemes to marry her off to the Shogun's second son, over her objections. She secretly tries to run away in search of Taigen, but her childhood tutor Seki insists on joining her. While Ringo enjoys and participates in the town's festivals, Mizu trains and meditates on the cliffs above. She remembers an assassin named Chiaki, who tricked her and Eiji into forging him a sword, which ultimately broke during the forging process, due to Mizu's turbulent mindset at the time. The Four Fangs soon catch up with her, with their leader revealed as Chiaki. Mizu duels and ultimately kills all four of them, but is wounded by Chiaki and knocked to the bottom of the cliff. Taigen reveals himself and challenges her, which she accepts, but Mizu collapses from bloodloss and exhaustion as they charge each other. Taigen rasies his sword, but cannot bring himself to kill a defenseless opponent.
