Final Fantasy is a 2023 American science fantasy action film based on the video game franchise of its same name developed and published by Square Enix. Directed by John Lasseter in his live-action directorial debut with the screen writer of Lasseter, Adele Lim, Qui Nguyen, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios in association with Square Enix, it stars Chris Pratt, Kristin Wiig, Jack Black, Genesis Rodriguez, Sandra Bullock, Chris Pine, James Marsden, Zac Efron, Adam DeVine, and Will Arnett loosely based on the 2020 video game remake, Final Fantasy VII.
After the critical and commercial failure of the 2001 computer-animated film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Square Enix became reluctant to license its intellectual properties for film adaptations. Production was underway by 2020, and the cast was announced in September 2021.
Final Fantasy was released on November 10, 2023 in the United States. It received positive reviews from critics for its characters, product placement, action sequences, and visual effects. A major box-office success, Final Fantasy successfully broke-even while its opening above expectations and has grossed over $824 million worldwide against a gross production budget of $90 million. A sequel is in development and scheduled to be released on December 25, 2025.
