Ghost in the Shell is a 2022 American computer-animated science-fiction action film based on the 1980s Japanese manga series by Masamune Shirow. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios, it was directed by Carlos López Estrada, with the screenwriter of Carlos López Estrada, Adele Lim, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong (the screenwriters of Family Guy), Teresa Hsiao, Qui Nguyen and Rodney Rothman; and story by Nicholas Stoller, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Adele Lim. The film stars Jamie Chung, J.K. Simmons, Bryan Cranston, Ryan Potter, Michael McCarty, Benedict Wong, Dave Thomas and Jimmy Tatro. After announcement of the computer-animated film at Movie Land in San Diego, Paramount produced a live-action film which was released in March 2017 to mixed reviews from critics and was a box-office bomb, like the 1995 anime film. Inspiration for settings and characters was based on the 2020 series Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045.
Ghost in the Shell premiered at Hollywood, Los Angeles on July 29, 2022 and was released in the United States on August 12, 2022, by Sony Pictures Releasing under its Columbia Pictures label, to critical and commercial success. The film grossed over $1.059 billion against a $80 million budget during its theatrical run, overtaking The Hollow, but surpassed by Arcane, making it the second highest-grossing film produced or released by Movie Land Animation Studios, and the first film from the studio to pass the billion-dollar mark. It also became the third highest-grossing film of 2022 behind Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick. Critics praised its animation, voice acting, action sequences, character development, originality, humor and slow-mo sequences. The film was nominated for the 14th Movie Land Fun and Excitement Awards for Best Animated Feature, but lost to Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
A sequel, Lights, Camera, Universe, is set for release on August 14, 2024, with Joaquim Dos Santos and Adele Lim attached to direct.

Casting[]
Due to the box-office failure of the 2017 live-action film, Scarlett Johansson won't be reprising her role as Motoko Kusanagi from it after she brought accusations of whitewashing in January 2015 to April 2016. In May 2020, Jamie Chung announced to replace Johansson's voice as Motoko Kusanagi, with new casts features J.K. Simmons, Bryan Cranston, Ryan Potter, Benedict Wong, Dave Thomas and Jimmy Tatro, while Michael McCarty reprised his role from the anime show as Ishikawa in July 2021. In December 2021, Roger Craig Smith also reprised his roles from the show, SAC_2045 as John Smith and Otomo's Security.
Animation and design[]
Animation services were provided by Movie Land Digital Production Services (MLDPS), Kumar Coca, and Sola Digital Arts. The team used computer animation to design the settings, environments and characters that may look like from the 2020 Netflix original show, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Inspiration for the design of the film came from Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Warner Animation Group's Scoob!, which opened an opportunity for Movie Land Animation Studios to pitch something that was more illustrative and stylized than their other films. According to Gavin Free, the film was shot using Phantom Flex high-speed cameras for the Slo-Mo sequences, producing 5,000 to 10,000 frames per second. In January 2021, the MLDPS staff began developing the Slo-Mo concept sequences. According to the late-2020 quarantine, productions and projects were finished remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Music[]
Henry Jackman composed the film score. Speaking about the score, Jackman said that "it has its own identity, similar to Wreck-It Ralph or Big Hero 6" having the "same musical landscape and color in this film", and also had enjoyed working in the film, calling the scoring sessions as "enormous fun". Skywalker Sound worked on the sound design, mixing and audio post-production for the film, after previously working on 2004's Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. "Solid Ground", performed by Kaskade, was included in the film's end credits and so as its soundtrack album. It was released on August 5, 2022, by Sony Classical Records.
