Development[]
In December 2020, a spin-off film featuring Ashleigh Ball as Mira is in development, with Joaquim Dos Santos and Micah Gunnell were hired to direct the film, with the screenplay by Carlos López Estrada, Adele Lim, Qui Nguyen and Emma Dudley and story by Carlos López Estrada, Adele Lim, Qui Nguyen, and Rodney Rothman. In March 2022, the film was renamed to "Mira: A Hollow Story" (to make Mira's own movie) and was released in October 2022.
Animation[]
Inspiration for the design of the film came from Warner Animation Group's Scoob! (2020), to make it more unique as a storybook than a comic. Animation services will be provided by Movie Land Digital Production Services (MLDPS), after previously working on The Hollow. It will be the first Movie Land Animation Studios film in history to have its aspect ratio opened up from 2.40:1 to 1.85:1 for select sequences of the film. The MLDPS crew wanted to give the film a "cinematic" and "chunky" look.
Music[]
Henry Jackman and Lorne Balfe returned to compose the film score, while Skywalker Sound handled audio post-production services. The soundtrack album was released on October 25, 2022 by Def Jam Records, while the score album was released the same day by Sony Classical Records. The CD album containing the soundtrack and score album was released on November 1, 2022.
Release[]
Mira: A Hollow Story premiered in Regency Village Theater on September 16, 2022, and was released on October 28, 2022, in RealD 3D, 4DX, Dolby Cinema, and IMAX formats. The film is projected to be the first Movie Land Animation Studios film to be filmed in IMAX formats. It was rated PG from the MPA for "scary action violence and some mild rude humor". Unlike its predecessor The Hollow, which was simultaneously released for purchase on demand in addition to a traditional theatrical release due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film will be released exclusively in theaters.
