Need for Speed is a 2023 American computer-animated auto-racing action thriller film based on the racing video game franchise of the same name by Electronic Arts, making it Movie Land Animation Studios' third film adaptation of the video game, with first being Overwatch (2020) and with second being Arcane (2022). Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios in association with Electronic Arts, the film was directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, from a screenplay written by David Callaham, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Adele Lim and Qui Nguyen.
After the critical and commercial failure of the live-action film Need for Speed (2014), Electronic Arts became reluctant to license its intellectual properties for film adaptations. Production was underway by 2020, and the cast was announced in September 2021. The film draws inspiration from The Fast and the Furious (2001), Cars (2006), and Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018).
Need for Speed had its world premiere at Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles on June 30, 2023, and was released in the United States on July 14 by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film received positive reviews from critics and has grossed over $843 million worldwide against its $90 million budget. A sequel is in production.

Animation and design[]
The film was animated by Movie Land Digital Production Services (MLDPS) in San Francisco, California, who had animated the majority of MLAS films beforehand. According to Christopher Miller, Rianda wanted “hand-painted watercolor style” look for the film, and much of the technology used for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was reused for Need for Speed to achieve this while new tools were created. Unlike Into the Spider-Verse's comic-book style visuals and techniques, NFS predominately used 2D-style effects to mimic the look of traditionally-animated films, including the use of squiggles for fur and watercolor brush strokes for elements such as trees and bushes. Production was underway by September 2020, with animation work ending in October 2022. Post-production work on the film had wrapped by March 2023.
In collaboration with La Femme Rouge Animation, Kumar Coca, Fortiche, and Studio Mir, the film's design was inspired by SPA's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), to make the film look more like storybook illustrations, from an idea suggested by production designer Scott Watanabe. MLDPS announced that the film will feature effects and characters visually styled after anime and cartoons similar to EA's Need for Speed Unbound, which was compared the film's visual aesthetic to Fortiche's Arcane: League of Legends, both having a "punk" style that MLDPS described as fun.
Not only that, it is also the third time to not be created by the Bellas VFX Studios in Toronto, after NBCUniversal sued it and force Movie Land to shut down operations and folded into MLDPS and Fortiche.
Music[]
- Main article: Need for Speed (2023 soundtrack)
Henry Jackman, who had composed the film score for the majority of MLAS films beforehand, composed the film's score, marking his third collaboration with Joaquim Dos Santos following Loppy the Dog 2: The Second Movie (2019) and Ned's Newt (2020), replacing Nathan Furst from the 2014 live-action film, with Kier Lehman served as a music supervision, while Skywalker Sound handled the audio post-production services for the movie. The song soundtrack was released on July 12, 2023.
Release[]
Need for Speed premiered at Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles on June 30, 2023, and was released in the United States on July 14 by Sony Pictures Releasing. It was originally scheduled for a July 28 release. Like the 2014 live-action film, NFS was rated PG-13 from the MPA for "some thematic elements, disturbing crash scenes, rude humor, reckless street racing, and brief strong language."
In theaters in the United States, Need for Speed was accompanied by the Carmen Sandiego short film RedCrackle: Carmen's Date.
Marketing[]
The teaser trailer was released online on December 18, 2022. In theaters, it was shown into screens before Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The first trailer was released online on March 27, 2023. In theaters, it was shown into screens in front of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The final trailer was released online on May 26, 2023, which was shown in theaters in front of the 2023 live-action film, The Little Mermaid.
