Once Upon a Universe is a 2023 American live-action/animated fantasy comedy short film directed by James Yang and Angus MacLane, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios. In the film, director James Yang discovers the Sony's Movie Land Universe characters are coming to life from pictures hanging in the MLAS's studio building. Inspired by Sony's Movie Land Universe's fifth anniversary on December 14, 2023, the short's art style combines computer graphics, traditional animation and live-action.

Once Upon a Universe premiered at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on August 12, 2023, will have its first public showing on Starz on October 19, 2023, part of the Movie Land Legacy Marathon: Sony's Movie Land Univers's Fifth Anniversary Celebration, hosted by Gal Gadot, the voice of Carmen Sandiego from 2019 film, along with the JH Movie Collection: The Great Outdoors short film Crackle Goes Street Racing and the television premiere of Grossology 2. The short film is set to premiere on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on October 20, 2023, and also aired that day on FX, FX Movie Channel, MeTV and Movie Land Television (in front of Fast & Furious Spy Racers). It was released in theaters alongside Grossology: The Final Chapter on December 1, 2023 and again with Mech Cadets on December 8, 2023.

Once Upon a Universe combines traditional animation, computer animation, and live-action, with Movie Land Digital Production Services handled the visual effects, character animation and computer graphics. Principal photography began filming at San Diego, California. The short film includes more than 300 characters and vocals from more than 30 voice actors.

Music

Henry Jackman composed the score for the short, which was composed so that it would feel reminiscent of each character's debut appearance.

Release
