Popeye is a 2022 computer-animated comedy film based on E. C. Segar's comics character of the same name. Written and directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, the film stars the voices of Tom Kenny, Kari Wahlgren, Tress MacNeille, Amy Poehler, Dee Bradley Baker, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, Tara Strong, Jim Gaffigan, Kristen Wiig, and Michael Spears.

The film follows Popeye who washes ashore on Sea Haven as an infant inside a spinach crate. Growing up an orphan who is mocked for being different from everyone else, a mysterious red jewel washes ashore one day and shows him visions of his parents: his father Poopdeck Pappy and his mother Roxy. Skipping ahead a few years, Popeye, now in his early 20s, along with Eugene the Jeep, orphanage owner Judy, and a reluctant Olive Oyl, set out across the ocean to find his parents; all while being pursued by the Sea Hag.

Produced by Warner Animation Group, King Features Entertainment, Golem Creations, Kingdom Story Company, Kevin Downes Productions, Erwin Brothers Entertainment, and Lord Miller Productions, the film was released in theaters and on HBO Max by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 16, 2022. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised the story, animation, characters, voice acting, humor, action sequences, and faithfulness to the source material, and grossed $246 million worldwide on a production budget of $80 million. Popeye is the last film to be produced under the Warner Animation Group name before the animation studio label became Warner Bros. Pictures Animation on June 9, 2023.

A sequel, Popeye: Guardian of Demonia, is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 4, 2025.

Plot[]

The film begins with a mermaid named Coral and a red fish named Lenny, introducing the audience to the legendary tale of Popeye the Sailor. It flashes back to Popeye's parents, Poopdeck Pappy and Roxy, meeting and falling in love at a bar in Honolulu, Hawaii. They get married and set out on a sailing adventure to Santa Monica, California, where Roxy gives birth to their son, Popeye, during a storm.

Tragedy strikes when baby Popeye falls ill. So, Poopdeck Pappy and Roxy sail to Plunder Island, where they seek help from the evil Sea Hag. She cures Popeye but then kidnaps him and turns the infant into a mindless sea zombie with her magical ruby eye. Poopdeck Pappy and Roxy disguise themselves as the Sea Hag's minions and rescue Popeye. However, to save their son, they send him away in a crate of spinach. Popeye drifts alone in the ocean, eventually washing ashore in Sea Haven, where he's taken in by Judy at the orphanage.

Popeye faces challenges growing up in the orphanage, struggling to fit in among the other orphans, including Bluto. One day, Popeye discovers a mysterious red jewel on the beach, which shows him visions of his long-lost parents. Inspired by these visions, he decides to go to the junkyard and build a boat, the Spinacher. There, he forms a special friendship with Eugene the Jeep.

Fourteen years later, Popeye, now a young adult, finishes building the boat, with the help of Eugene, and prepares to set sail on a quest to find his family and discover where he truly belongs. However, they don't know where they're going, so they need to get the directions first. Meanwhile, Olive Oyl prepares for her wedding to Bluto but feels unfulfilled in her structured life. He tries to propose to her with a tiny ring but gets rejected not only by her but also by her mother, Nana Oyl.

At the harbor, Popeye parks his boat near one of the docks and goes to a local diner to eat lunch. There, he meets Wimpy, who gives him the directions to Plunder Island - he must pass through Mosquito Island, reach Sky Island, traverse the Heart of Darkness, and then he'll get to Plunder Island. That night, Bluto sneaks into Popeye's boat and steals the ruby while he's sleeping. The next day, Popeye wakes up and realizes the ruby is missing. He finds out from a newspaper that Bluto has it and is using the ruby to propose to Olive Oyl. This leads Popeye to a mission to retrieve it.

Chaos ensues, as Popeye accidentally kidnaps Olive while she's sleepwalking, taking the ruby with them. Popeye and Olive, along with Eugene, Nana, and Judy, sail away from Sea Haven and embark on an adventurous journey across the ocean to Plunder Island, the key to Popeye's family. During their voyage, they stop at Mosquito Island for an overnight stay. They then leave the island the next day.

Olive tries to steer the boat to get back to Sea Haven. However, Popeye fights with her over the wheel and accidentally throws her overboard. He rescues Olive and brings her back on board. Olive then gives Popeye his ruby back, realizing it rightfully belongs to him. The next day, Popeye reaches Sky Island, but his ruby gets stolen by Captain Noah Skywalker and his gang of Sky Pirates. Popeye and his friends dress up as female pirates to seduce the Sky Pirates and get the ruby back through trickery, before escaping.

Popeye hands the ruby to Olive for safekeeping. Meanwhile, the Sea Hag sends her largest minion, Alice the Goon, to stop Popeye from reaching Plunder Island and finding his parents. But Olive Oyl convinces her to not attack them. She surrenders and runs away. After some adventures at sea, Popeye finally reaches Plunder Island, only to discover his parents aren't there. Devastated, he tells Olive she should return home to Sea Haven and marry Bluto. Olive returns home with Bluto and Nana, feeling Popeye only sees her as the rich girl from the house on the hill.

Popeye gives up sailing until his parents reappear in a dream, revealing their captivity by the Sea Hag. However, the Sea Hag shows up on her vulture and asks Popeye where the ruby is. He tells her Bluto has it. So, she starts heading for Sea Haven. Popeye gains superstrength by eating spinach and returns to Sea Haven to stop the wedding. He reconciles with Olive, who realizes she doesn't love Bluto and returns to support him. They cancel her wedding, affirming her desire for a free-spirited life. Bluto confronts Popeye but is defeated.

However, the Sea Hag regains the ruby and becomes powerful, wreaking havoc. Popeye loses his spinach power but regains it through Olive's encouragement. Inspired, he defeats the Sea Hag and reclaims the ruby, causing her to lose her power. In a surprising act of compassion, Popeye allows the Sea Hag to keep the ruby, provided she uses her magic for good.

The film ends with a heartwarming wedding ceremony, uniting Popeye, Olive, their parents, Judy, and even Eugene. After the wedding, they set sail together on Popeye's ship, ready to embrace their new life as a loving and adventurous family.
