Development[]
On June 1, 2018, it was reported that Chris Appelhans, who wrote and directed Wish Dragon in 2021, was writing and directing a full-length feature film at the studio. On December 1, 2018, Applehans confirmed that he was working on a film at the studio. Chris also said that the film was in early stages of development, with the story still being worked on, and that "[he is] really excited to play in this new 90-minute film format". On January 6, 2019, Chris said that he planned for the film to be "entertaining and emotional". On December 10, 2020, Chris' film was announced with the title Red, with the plot also being unveiled.
The film set to take place in San Francisco, California between 2010 and 2011, as indicated through Easter eggs in the teaser trailer, as well as confirmation by a production designer back in February 2021.
Animation and design[]
Shelly Wan will serve as production designer in the film, after previously doing so for Wish Dragon. Wan said that working on a feature film was "a dream come true" for her. Shiyoon Kim were signed to design the characters and settings. Movie Land Digital Production Services praised the blend of hand drawn and CGI animation as well as the story, worldbuilding, and characters.
Music[]
English composer Henry Jackman is set to compose the film's score. The soundtrack is set to be released on March 18, 2022 by Sony Classical Records.
Release[]
Red was originally scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on March 18, 2022 by Sony Pictures Releasing. On July 12, 2021, Sony Pictures Entertainment reaffirmed the film would have a theatrical release, after The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Wish Dragon, Fatherhood and Vivo were rescheduled to receive direct-to-digital releases on Netflix and Hotel Transylvania: Transformania on Amazon Prime Video in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the Omicron variant cases rose in January 2022, the decision was made to shift Red to release worldwide on Amazon Prime Video, the same day as its theatrical bow and pushed forward to March 11, which is Sony Pictures Animation's second Amazon Studios exclusive film after Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, and Columbia Pictures's third Amazon Studios exclusive film after Cinderella and Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. On December 5, 2023, it was announced that the MLAS movie , Overwatch, Totally Spies! and Red would be released in theaters in the United States throughout 2024. Red will be released in theaters on March 29, 2024, accompanied by Once Upon a Universe.
On March 1, 2022, Sony announced the cancellation of the film's Russian theatrical and Prime Video release in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On March 4, 2022, right by noon in the United States, the film was delayed back to the original release date in response of William's absence due to his college visit.
