Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan (Template:IPA-hi; 27 December 1965)[1] is an Indian actor, film producer, and television personality who works in Hindi films. In a film career spanning over thirty years, Khan has received numerous awards, including two National Film Awards as a film producer, and two Filmfare Awards as an actor.[2] He is cited in the media as one of the most commercially successful actors of Indian cinema.[3][4] Forbes included him in their 2015 list of Top-Paid 100 Celebrity Entertainers in the world. Khan tied with Amitabh Bachchan for No. 71 on the list, both with earnings of $33.5 million.[5][6] According to the Forbes list in 2018, Khan was the highest-ranked Indian, placing 82nd, with earnings of $37.7 million.[7][8] He has been hosting the reality show Bigg Boss since 2010.[9]

The eldest son of screenwriter Salim Khan, Khan began his acting career with a supporting role in Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988), followed by a leading role in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). He continued in Bollywood in the 1990s, with roles in several productions, including the romantic drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), the action comedy Andaz Apna Apna (1994), the action thriller Karan Arjun (1995), the comedy Biwi No.1 (1999), and the family drama Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999). After a brief period of decline in the 2000s, Khan achieved greater stardom in the 2010s by playing the lead role in successful action films like Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Kick (2014), Sultan (2016), and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017).

In addition to his acting career, Khan is a television presenter and promotes humanitarian causes through his charity, Being Human Foundation.[10] Khan's off-screen life is marred by controversy and legal troubles. In 2015, he was convicted of culpable homicide for a negligent driving case in which he ran over five people with his car, killing one, but his conviction was set aside on appeal.[11][12][13][14] On 5 April 2018, Khan was convicted in a blackbuck poaching case and sentenced to five years imprisonment.[15][16] He is currently out on bail while an appeal is being heard.[17]

Khan has starred in ten of the highest grossers of the year, starting from 1947 to 2020, the highest for any actor in the history of Hindi cinema.[18]

Early life and ancestry[]

Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan, the eldest offspring of screenwriter Salim Khan and his first spouse, Sushila Charak, who later adopted the name Salma, was born on 27 December 1965. He comes from a background of mixed religious faiths, with a Muslim father and a Hindu mother. In 1981, when Salim Khan married the actress Helen, the relationship between the children and their father became strained, but it eventually improved in the ensuing years.

Salman Khan's paternal great-grandparents are believed to have been Alakozai Pashtuns from Afghanistan who migrated to Indore State, Indore Residency (now in Madhya Pradesh), British India, during the mid-1800s. However, Jasim Khan, in his biography of the actor, suggests that Salman's ancestors were part of the Akuzai sub-tribe of the Yusufzai Pashtuns from Malakand in the Swat valley of North-West Frontier Province, British India (now in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan). His grandfather, Abdul Rashid Khan, held the position of Deputy Inspector General of the Indore state and was honored with the Diler Jung award during the Holkar times. Khan's mother is a homemaker; her father, Baldev Singh Charak, a Dogra Rajput, hails from Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir, while her Marathi mother comes from Maharashtra. Salman Khan is proficient in Marathi, alongside Hindi and English. He has two brothers, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan, as well as two sisters, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, who is married to actor/director Atul Agnihotri, and an adopted sister named Arpita.

Salman completed his schooling at St. Stanislaus High School in Bandra, Mumbai, along with his younger brothers Arbaaz and Sohail. Previously, he attended The Scindia School in Gwalior for a few years, alongside his younger brother Arbaaz. He also briefly attended St. Xavier's College in Mumbai but eventually dropped out.
