Sausage Party (also known as Sausage Party: Restocked for 2024) is a 2024 adult computer-animated adventure comedy film directed by Genndy Tartakovsky and Conrad Vernon from a screenplay by Tartakovsky, Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg and a story by Rogen, Goldberg, Jonah Hill, and Vernon. It is a reboot of the original 2016 film of the same name. A parody of Disney and Pixar films, the film follows Frank, an anthropomorphic sausage who lives with his fellow foods and beverages in a supermarket owned and operated by humans. However, the groceries believe that humans are immortal gods, and when a human woman enters the store, she befriends Frank and helps him discover the truth about what happens when groceries are purchased. The two go on a journey with Frank's grocery friends to escape their fate while also facing a psychotic and malicious douche who wants to kill him.
The film was released in theaters by Columbia Pictures through Sony Pictures Releasing on February 16, 2024. It received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the animation, voice performances, script, use of grotesque humor, and musical score, though it received some criticism for the runtime. It was a box office success, grossing $386 million worldwide on a budget of $95-120 million.
Plot[]
Frank Frankfurter is a sausage who lives in a grocery store called Shopwell's with his hot dog bun girlfriend Brenda Bunson and his sausage best friends Carl and Barry. Frank and the other groceries are blissfully awaiting their destiny to be chosen by the "gods" and taken to the magical "Great Beyond". This belief is reinforced by a morning song and dance ritual the groceries perform in worship.
One day, a jar of honey mustard returns from the Great Beyond, acting paranoid and disturbed. He tries to warn the groceries that the Great Beyond is not what they think, but nobody listens except Frank. Before committing suicide by jumping off a cart and falling onto the shop floor, Honey Mustard tells Frank to seek out a bottle of liquor named Firewater.
Honey Mustard's suicide creates an accidental cart collision that causes Frank, Brenda, and several groceries to fall out of the cart, including a Jewish bagel named Sammy Bagel Jr., a Middle-Eastern lavash named Kareem Abdul Lavash, and a nasty and aggressive douche who swears revenge on Frank and Brenda after his nozzle is bent on impact.
Frank is disturbed by this and wonders if the Great Beyond claim is untrue. He decides to go out into the actual world to find answers. He meets a human woman named Camille Toh and discovers the gods are humans and that they consume groceries as food. Meanwhile, Brenda gets separated from Frank and ends up being hunted by the villainous Douche seeking revenge against Frank. Teresa del Taco, a lesbian taco shell who develops a crush on Brenda, helps her, Sammy, and Lavash evade and humiliate Douche.
Frank continues his mission to expose the truth about the Great Beyond. He seeks out the Non-Perishables, a group of immortal, non-perishable groceries led by Firewater, who reveal they invented the Great Beyond myth to pacify groceries before being eaten. Frank shares this news with his hot dog bun girlfriend Brenda, but she doesn't believe him. Their disagreement causes a rift in their relationship. He continues his journey alone.
Frank finally arrives at the Dark Aisle beyond the freezer section, where he finds definitive proof about the Great Beyond's horrors in a secret cookbook. He shows the proof to Brenda, and she finally believes him. He finally earns back her trust. Frank and Brenda decide to reveal the truth to the other groceries. They panic at first, but the groceries refuse to believe Frank's warnings. However, Camille returns with a severed human head, proving that the humans can be killed. Frank and Brenda decide to lead a revolt against the humans before the store opens to save everyone. Camille joins their cause against her own people.
Frank, Brenda, and Camille lead the attack once the grocery store opens for shoppers. All the groceries unleash their fury against the humans who have lied to them and exploited them. A huge, chaotic battle erupts across the grocery store. There are triumphant moments but also some tragic losses as several humans are gruesomely killed by the groceries, who risk their lives doing so. Douche, who has absorbed the contents of several liquor bottles throughout the film, becomes a wild monster and takes control of the store manager Darren by inserting himself into his anus and yanking on his scrotum to puppeteer his actions.
As the battle continues, Douche and Darren find Frank. Once they catch him, Douche confronts Frank about becoming a god now that he is in control of Darren and takes a bite out of Frank's torso. Brenda saves Frank as Barry and the other groceries catch Douche and Darren in a garbage pail strapped to propane tanks. They are then launched out of the store as the tanks explode, killing them both. As the battle ends, the groceries expel the surviving humans and emerge victorious. In the aftermath, with their oppressors gone, the groceries give in to their carnal urges, resulting in a wild, store-wide orgy. All sexual rules are out the window.
Finally, Frank, Brenda, and their friends realize there is nothing left for them in the store anymore. They decide to venture out into the human world and live freely. In the end, the groceries discover their entire existence is an animated illusion created by filmmakers. They are merely animated characters voiced by famous actors in another dimension. Gum, a Stephen Hawking-like wad of chewing gum, has constructed a portal to this dimension, and they decide to travel there to confront their creators.
