Short Land is a series of American independent animated short films produced by Movie Land Animation Studios. It consists of a program in which Movie Land employees are given six months and limited budgets to develop animated short films that were originally released on YouTube, and later in theaters and on Amazon Prime Video.
Pearl, League, and Cit Cat, the first three shorts of the Short Land program were released at SIGGRAPH on September 28, 2018, before having a limited release at Regency Village Theatre on January 29, 2019. Pearl was officially released on March 1, 2019, on YouTube while League and Cit Cat were released on March 9 and 15, respectively. Part of Sony's Movie Land Universe, Codes was the first short of the Short Land program to be released in theaters on November 22, 2019, while subsequent shorts were released on December 27, on Amazon Prime Video, with Water being released as an Amazon original, rather than on YouTube. The shorts have been praised for their more mature themes compared to traditional MLAS feature productions.
Development[]
Movie Land Animation Studios first announced the Short Land program on January 18, 2019. The program consists of giving employees at MLAS six months and a limited budget to develop indie short films, all of them based on personal experiences. The program was developed in order to find new filmmakers at MLAS.
While the pre-productions and storyboards were made at Movie Land Animation Studios' San Diego, Vancouver and Toronto studio since March 2023, the shorts' animation services were made by some several studios such as Flying Bark Productions, Movie Land Digital Production Services, La Femme Rouge Animation (formerly The Bellas VFX Studios), Titmouse, 88 Pictures, Studio Mir, the Kumar Coca's Bangalore and Vancouver studio, and Fortiche.
