Spy Friends is an 2021 American live-action/computer-animated science-fiction spy action buddy comedy film starring the featured characters of Jerry and his best friend, William and Ella Ray from the previous film, Jerry and Will. The film was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman from a screenplay by Phil Lord and Rothman. The film was produced by Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios in association with Wanda Pictures, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film stars the voice of Daryl Sabara, Tom Cruise, Julia Michaels, Moisés Arias, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Jake T. Austin, Dane Cook, Matthew McConaughey and Robert G. Chiu.
Spy Friends was released theatrically by Sony Pictures Releasing under its Columbia Pictures label, first in China on May 28, 2021, before a release in the United States on October 22, 2021.

In August 2017, Movie Land Animation Studios announced an untitled SPA/MLAS film in 2021 by Sony Pictures Animation to develop the live-action/computer-animated film with Peter Ramsey is set to direct the film with the writers of Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman. As of April 14, 2018, Peter saying his films always did well on their service and that no one else makes the kind of live action family friendly films he makes.
In December 2018, Movie Land announced to name the film title as "Spy Friends" after Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman were served as a director.
Casting[]
Daryl Sabara, Tom Cruise and Julia Michaels were announced to star on February 3, 2018.
Filming[]
Preliminary production on the film officially started on May 30, 2018, in Seattle, Washington. Principal photography was scheduled until March 9, 2020, in San Francisco, California; Los Angeles, California; Joliet, Illinois; Orland Park/Tinley Park; Illinois; Merrillville, Indiana; St. John, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois.
Visual effects[]
The visual effects, animation and computer graphics were provided by Movie Land Digital Production Services, Digital Domain, Moving Picture Company (MPC), Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and Rising Sun Pictures, who were filmed with Phantom high speed cameras which shoot at 1,000-25,000 frames per second and was done remotely during the pandemic, with the filmmakers doing creative exploration on certain shots, and finalizing material through production groups.[1] William Renschen and Stephen Rosenbaum were the main visual effects supervisor and Shiyoon Kim was hired to design the characters.

On December 21, 2018, Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios revealed that Henry Jackman, Rupert Gregson-Williams, Lorne Balfe, Tom Holkenborg and Daniel Pemberton, for best known for their collaborations on the MLAS films such as Tom the Hand 4, Famous 5 and The JH Movie Collection Movie 4: Friendship Vacation.
Release[]
Spy Friends was originally scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures Releasing on January 22, 2021. On Christmas Day, it was delayed to July 9, 2021, partially due to Jerry's friendship separation, as well as the recent delays of Overwatch and Spy Penguins due to the rise of COVID-19 cases, before being delayed two weeks from July 23, 2021, to avoid competition with Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, right before releasing the trailer on April 3, 2021, before bring delayed again to October 22, 2021, to avoid competition again with Hotel Transylvania: Transformania.

The film's logo was released on July 21, 2020. After the day that the film is being delayed to July 23, 2021, the official trailer was released on April 3, 2021.
