The Bunnies in a Christmas Caper is a computer-animated short film produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios. The short film serves a prologue of the 2019 film, Bunny. The short premiered in theaters in the United States on December 14, 2018 with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It was directed by Rupert Sanders, who had directed Ghost in the Shell, with the screenplay by Nicholas Stoller. The short received positive reviews from critics for its voice acting and animation.

It was the first short film to be distributed by Sony, part of Sony's Movie Land Universe, after a five-year distribution deal with Columbia Pictures.

Production

It was announced that Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios will be making of this film about rabbits or hares. The animation production for the film was created by Movie Land Digital Production Services and was made using Autodesk Maya.

Unlike Warner Bros. films, Movie Land announced that The Bunnies in a Christmas Caper will be the very first film to be produced by Sony Pictures Animation.

Music

The original music for the short was composed by Henry Jackman. The sound for the film is recorded, designed and edited at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, California.

Release

The Bunnies in a Christmas Caper was released in theaters on December 14, 2018 in the United States with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Home media

The Bunnies in a Christmas Caper was released on Digital Download on February 26, 2019 and on Blu-ray with The Animals in the Attic. It was released on Ultra HD Blu-ray, as a bonus feature attached to The Animals in the Attic. The Bunnies in a Christmas Caper was released with Movie Land Animation Studios Short Films Collection, Volume 5 on Digital Download on June 25, 2019 and on Blu-ray on July 9, 2019 by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. It is also released on Movie Land Disc, as a bonus feature attached to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Animals in the Attic and Movie Land Animation Studios Short Films Collection, Volume 5. On November 20, 2019, The Bunnies in a Christmas Caper was released on Blu-ray with Spider-Gwen on December 10, 2019, as a bonus feature which includes three mini movies.

Reception

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 100% of 23 critics gave the film a positive review, with an average rating of 8.98/10. Using a weighted average calculator, Metacritic assigned the film a score of 84 out of 100, based on 17 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".
