The JH Movie Collection Movie 4: Friendship Vacation is a 2021 American computer-animated action-adventure comedy film based on the television series of The JH Movie Collection Show by The Simpsons creator, Matt Groening. It was directed by William Renschen and Gary Ross. The fourth installment in the JH Movie Collection Movie franchise and the sequel to The JH Movie Collection Movie: The Fate of the Tour, it was the last film to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, before licensed the film rights to Sony Pictures to produced with Sony Pictures Animation starting with its spin-off film, Jerry and Will, followed by the fifth film Friendsformania and the sixth film Homecoming.

The film stars the voice roles of Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey, Jamie Chung, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Andy Samberg, James Corden, Daryl Sabara, Tom Cruise, Julia Michaels, Avril Lavigne, Dua Lipa and Bill Hader, with newcomers Ava Max, Peter Dinklage, Thomas Haden Church, Ken Jeong, Chloe Bennet, Keean Johnson, Mahershala Ali and Danny Jacobs. Unlike the previous three installments, Village Roadshow Pictures and Aardman Animations were not involved with the film and it was the only installment to be released in theaters and on HBO Max in the United States.

The JH Movie Collection Movie 4: Friendship Vacation was released in the United States on April 2, 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures, in theaters and on HBO Max. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised its animation, voice acting, LGBT representation, screenplay and humor, and grossed over $253.3 million worldwide against the $99 million budget, which was still a commercial success and was nominated for Annie Awards for Best Animated Feature.

A spin-off film, Jerry and Will, was released on July 9, 2021, with Sony Pictures Animation taking over the studio from Warner Bros., respectively.

Production

Development

On December 2018, after the success of the first film, the fourth film for The JH Movie Collection Movie was announced, with Gary Ross is served to direct and write the film. On January 2019, Nicholas Stoller and Rodney Rothman were served to write the film. Warner Bros. had already begun the process of starting development of movies with budgets of around $100 million. The intellectual property for these films was meant to be supplied by Warner Animation Group, among others and included the Lego Movie films, Storks and Smallfoot.

Director Gary Ross agreed to make a feature film version of the show with the promise it would be the first of a planned trilogy. During development stages of the film, he and his co-director and co-writer Phil Lord intended to revisit some of the greatest films of the time, with Ocean's 8 having the core inspirations for the film.

On October 19, 2020, Movie Land confirmed that the title will rename it into The JH Movie Collection Movie 4: Friendship Vacation.

Casting

In May 2018, the majority of the voice cast was announced. As of April 13, 2019, Ava Max, Peter Dinklage, Thomas Haden Church and Ken Jeong were joined the cast. On May 31, 2019, Chloe Bennet and Keean Johnson were joining the cast. On August 2, 2019, Mahershala Ali and Danny Jacobs were joining the cast.

Animation and design

Animation services were provided by Movie Land Digital Production Services (MLDPS), who hired 3D animators with a passion for 2D animation for the project. The strategy the animators used was to base the animation off a stylized 3D/CGI VFX modeling medium through a vintage 2D finish by creating innovative rigging, animation techniques used to create 2D animation, and custom tools such as lighting and rendering, resulting in the film's 3D/CGI animation maintaining the look, feel, and spirit of 2D animation, in the vein of the classic cartoons from the Titmouse portfolio, but with an expensive budget. The animators also used early JH Movie Collection Show as reference and inspiration for the animation sequences.

Music, sound services and soundtrack

Henry Jackman, who previously composed the first three film, returned to compose the score for The JH Movie Collection Movie 4: Friendship Vacation, with newcomers Rupert Gregson-Williams, Tom Holkenborg, Lorne Balfe and BTS and with Major Lazer will return to compose for the first film and Avril Lavigne was served to mix the film score. The soundtrack will be released on March 26, 2021 on digital and CD by Mad Decent and WaterTower Music. The film score will be released on April 2, 2021 on digital and CD by WaterTower Music.

The sound services were done at Skywalker Sound, who is collaborated with Amblin Entertainment and Tom Cruise on War of the Worlds.

Release

The JH Movie Collection Movie 4: Friendship Vacation will be released on April 2, 2021 in the United States, in 2D, 3D, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and IMAX 3D formats by Warner Bros. Pictures, in select theatres and on the HBO Max streaming app for 31 days at no extra cost, as part of the Warner Bros. Same Day Premieres. It was previously scheduled to be released on May 28, 2021.

On January 14, 2021, The JH Movie Collection Movie 4: Friendship Vacation was originally scheduled to be premiered on Qubo on the same day, but it was then announced that the Qubo release was cancelled due to the shutdown of Qubo on February 28, 2021.

Marketing

On April 1, 2020, MLAS and Warner Bros. released the teaser poster for the film. On September 12, 2020, Warner Bros. released the teaser trailer for the film. On February 1, 2021, the official trailer was released. The cool toys were released from McDonald's as part of the McDonald's Happy Meal.

Home media

The JH Movie Collection Movie 4: Friendship Vacation was released on Digital HD by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on June 29, 2021, with DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray released on July 13, 2021.

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 86% of 120 critics gave the film a positive review, with an average rating of 9/10. Using a weighted average calculator, Metacritic assigned the film a score of 80 out of 100, based on 100 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.

A video game based on the film, titled The JH Movie Collection Movie 4 Videogame, was released for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on March 26, 2021. It was developed by 3DClouds and published by Outright Games.

Future

With Sony Pictures Animation acquiring the film rights to The JH Movie Collection Movie franchise in January 2020, the future of the sequel is currently uncertain, although some may know that it will be released on Disney+.

A spin-off film to The JH Movie Collection Movie and its franchise, entitled Jerry and Will in September 2020, was announced on December 2018, with Daryl Sabara, Tom Cruise, Julia Michaels, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Jake T. Austin and Ellie Goulding were joining the cast. In January 2020, Sony Pictures Animation entered early negotiations to distribute upcoming feature film properties based on the television series. Although the original JH Movie Collection Movie characters are still owned by Warner Bros. Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation will develop and distribute future JH Movie Collection films. In April 2020, the deal with Sony Pictures Animation was set for a 3 year film deal with Warner Bros. still owning the previous four films. It stars Daryl Sabara, Tom Cruise, Julia Michaels, Jake T. Austin and Tenzing Norgay Trainor. It was released on July 2, 2021 by Sony Pictures Releasing under the Columbia Pictures label. It will be directed by William Renschen from the screenplays by William Renschen and Rodney Rothman and a story by Hoyt H. Yeatman Jr. and David James.

In September 2019, Movie Land Animation Studios announced that a fifth film is in development and is scheduled to be released on April 8, 2022. In December 2020, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse crew producers were announced to began filming the project. William Renschen was hired to direct and write the animated film, now with a script by Robert L. Baird and Rodney Rothman. In April 2021, the film's title was revealed to be The JH Movie Collection Movie: Friendsformania. In March 2022, Sony announced that The JH Movie Collection Movie: Homecoming would be the final film in the franchise.

In December 2020, unlike the first four films, Movie Land confirmed that the sequel would be released by Sony Pictures under the Sony Pictures Animation label, instead of Warner Bros. Pictures, after Sony Pictures Animation producing the 2021 spinoff film Jerry and Will.
