The Loud House Movie is a 2021 American 2D hand-drawn/traditional animated musical comedy film featuring characters from the Nickelodeon series The Loud House. The movie is poduced by Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon Movies and Nickelodeon Animation Studios with animation services provided by Jam Filled Entertainment in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, with the former having provided the animation for the television series, it was directed by the series creator Chris Savino, co-directed Dave Needham in his directorial debut,[1] from a screenplay by Kevin Sullivan and Chris Viscardi, and starring the voices of Asher Bishop, David Tennant, Michelle Gomez. Katy Townsend, and the regular voice cast of the series; consisting of Tex Hammond, Jill Talley, Brian Stepanek, Catherine Taber, Liliana Mumy, Nika Futterman, Cristina Pucelli, Jessica DiCicco, Grey DeLisle, Lara Jill Miller, and Andre Robinson, reprising their respective roles. It tells the story of the Louds going to Scotland where they learn that they are descended from royalty.[2]

The film was originally going to be theatrically released in 2020 by Paramount Pictures. Instead, the film had a digital release on Netflix on August 20, 2021. It was met with mixed to positive reviews from critics, praising its animation, acting, and songs, while some criticized the plot.

Plot[]

The Loud family have a celebratory dinner where Lincoln begins to think that he lives in the shadow of his sisters.

After a talk with Clyde McBride about where one side of his family came from, Lincoln asks his parents the same question. While Rita states that most of her family came from Royal Woods, Lynn Loud Sr. is unsure about his side of the family. This leads to Lisa doing an experiment where she traces Lynn Sr.'s heritage to Scotland. The Loud family then heads to Scotland for a week long vacation on a hectic trip involving parachuting from a cargo hold, flying in a hot air balloon, and traveling in a submarine. Upon arriving in the Scottish town of Loud Loch, a town filled with many oddities, the Loud family learns from the citizens of the town that they are descendants of Scottish royalty and are led to a castle ran by groundskeeper Angus and the disgruntled property caretaker Morag.

Angus then shows the family a painting of their descendants that bears a striking resemblance to themselves and reveals they ruled the town for many years before sailing away forever. Lincoln eventually learns from Angus that his own ancestral counterpart, the Duke of the family, was the most special member of the family, much to his delight. Wanting to become the new Duke of Loch Loud, he partakes in many community service events to help restore the village to its former glory and eventually guilt trips the rest of the family into moving to Scotland forever since the family no longer has to share one bathroom.

As the Louds adjust to their discovery while experiencing the ghost of their descendant Lucille Loud, a baby dragon who grows very fast that they name Lela, and enjoying their time in the castle, Morag becomes frustrated with the family after living in the castle peacefully and quietly for many years. She then devises a plan like her ancestor Aggie to get the family to leave Loch Loud forever by hypnotizing Lela with a magic gemstone known as the Dragon Stone and the royal scepter.

After the sisters begin to get attention in the village, Morag tricks Lincoln into riding Lela to try to get back his attention. While he rides the dragon, she uses the gemstone and scepter to hypnotize it into destroying the town so Lincoln could get blamed for the chaos. Feeling guilty for the damage, Lincoln asks the family to return home to Royal Woods. As the family leaves for home, Morag proceeds to make herself the new duchess of the town much to the displeasure of villagers. In response, she hypnotizes Lela again to cause more destruction to the village.

The ghost of Lucille Loud tells the family of Morag's plan and what she's doing to the town. The Loud children, minus Lily, head back to the town on a row boat and team up to defeat Morag and un-hypnotize Lela. The sisters eventually get the scepter back and Lincoln, using his magic skills, destroys the gemstone which breaks Lela out of her spell and in response, Morag is dropped on an island filled with seals bearing resemblance to the Louds. The town of Loch Loud congratulates the family and asks Lincoln to resume his place as the duke of the kingdom, though Lincoln declines and instead offers the crown to Angus instead, feeling he deserved to be duke more, a decision approved by the kingdom and the ghosts of the Loud ancestors.

After helping repair the village, the Loud family says goodbye to Angus and the villagers and sets sail back home to Royal Woods. Bobby arrives in Scotland too late to find that Lori is on her way back to Royal Woods. Clyde welcomes Lincoln back to Royal Woods with some duke cupcakes.

During the credits, still images are shown that include but are not limited to the Duke's ghost riding Lela, Bobby finally reuniting with Lori, Leni contacting her love interest Scott online, Lincoln winning a 3rd place trophy with Lily present, Lela having laid three eggs, and Angus and the ghosts rescuing Morag who now works as the groundskeeper with Lela keeping her in line.

Trivia[]

Background information[]

  • The Loud House is the seventh Nicktoon to get an animated feature film. The first six were Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, The Wild Thornberrys, SpongeBob SquarePants, Rocko's Modern Life and Invader Zim.
    • However, The Loud House would be the eighth Nicktoon to get an animated feature film if one also counts Doug's 1st Movie, which was produced by Disney.
  • Due to this not being a theatrical release, this is also the first Nickelodeon Movies film to not have Paramount Pictures mentioned or attached in anyway, but has the Paramount Animation banner, receive an MPA rating (despite the 1967 MPA logo appearing in the end credits), and the first to currently not have a critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, it is also the second Loud House movie not to feature the 2009-2017 Nickelodeon Productions logo.
  • The movie uses the new Nickelodeon Movies logo first introduced in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, and is one of only three movies to use it except The Loud House: The First Movie (tying with PAW Patrol: The Movie, released the same day as the movie).
  • Although Chris Savino stated at Comic-Con 2017 that the events of the film will be separate from the series, Dave Needham, the film's director, overruled his statement and confirmed that the film is canon to the series, as it is chronologically set between Season 4 and Season 5, since Lily is in her previous design. However, he is uncertain whether or not the show will acknowledge the events of the film in a future episode.
    • Dave Needham elaborates in an interview on the Nerds Social Club Podcast that the film takes place during the summer following the events of "Coupe Dreams".
  • The first promo image of the film features what seems to be the Loud family wearing Scottish clothes. For a while, people have debated whether the image was depicting the present Loud family, or the Louds' ancestors. Dave Needham confirmed in an interview on Animation Scoop that the image is of the ancestors 400 years ago. This is further supported by certain scenes in the film, such as when Angus reveals the portrait when the Louds enter their castle for the first time, and when Lucy summons Lucille.
    • In the same interview, Dave reveals that when he signed on as director, he asked Kevin Sullivan and Chris Viscardi on why the film is specifically set in Scotland. The response he got was that Lynn Sr.'s side of the family came from Europe, but they never really specified where, saying they wanted someplace with a castle. Dave immediately approved of their decision to choose Scotland, saying that he has a personal connection to the country, as his sister lives there, while he grew up in Wales.
  • Because of how the ghosts of the Louds' ancestors appear like they do in their family portrait, some people have theorized that they died at the age of how they appeared. However, Dave Needham debunked those theories by confirming that the reason why they appeared like they do in their portrait was because it allowed for easier identifying, saying that it would've been confusing if they appeared as older versions of themselves.
  • The animation for the movie were done by Jam Filled Entertainment (the show's main animation studio), who used traditional 2D animation to animate the characters, vehicles and objects, which was animated in Toon Boom Harmony while the hand-drawn backgrounds are painted using Adobe Photoshop and Nickelodeon Digital Animation Studios, who used computer-generated imagery for the vehicles, and the camera backdrops.
    • The Loud House has several things:
      • The characters, locations, props, objects, machines and vehicles looks stylish in their Season 1 and Season 2 designs.
      • Lincoln, Lori, Leni, Luna, Luan, Lynn Jr., Lucy, Lana, Lola, Lisa, and Lily looks exactly the same in their Season 1 and Season 2 designs.
      • Lynn Sr. and Rita looks the same in their Season 2 designs.
      • Ronnie Anne looks like a cross between her Season 1 and Season 2 designs.
    • There are also a few general animation differences, as the film was produced in a budget:
      • Some backgrounds in specific scenes, and the camera backdrops are animated in 3D.
      • Reflections are shown in the water.
      • Lighting and shadows are more visible.
      • The animation is generally noticeably the same as it is in the show in some scenes.
  • This is the first piece of Loud House media to be dubbed in Hindi and Ukrainian, despite the fact that its parent series was not dubbed in said languages at the time of its release.
  • The stop-motion animation sequences for Lincoln and Morag's battle at Loch Loud was animated by Screen Novelties and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, in their first and only production in the Loud House franchise.
  • Chris Savino originally intended to produce an episode of the series where the Loud would travel to Scotland to meet their relatives, then known as the McLouds. Although he approved of this idea carrying over into the movie, he disagrees with the inclusion of fantasy elements (such as dragons) that the film introduced to the show's universe.
    • His original envisioning for the film, meanwhile, did not involve the Louds leaving Royal Woods; it was meant to take place mostly at their house. There was also supposed to be a scene where the Loud house exploded.

General trivia[]

  • This film reveals that Lynn Sr.'s side of the family are descended from Scotland, and that the entire Loud family is a part of Scottish rule, as their ancestors were once the rulers of a small Scottish town called Loch Loud.
  • According to Rita, her side of the family has always been in Royal Woods.
  • In the film and its broadcast premiere on Nickelodeon, Lincoln says "Okay, girls. Operation Get the Scepter from Morag and Save the Village Before It's Too Late and Also Think of a Shorter Name for this Operation is a go!"
  • According to Clyde, his ancestral grandmothers are descended from France, and that they're well-known for their baking skills.
  • The setup of the film is similar to the setup of "Making the Case", as they both involve Lincoln realizing that he has nothing to show while his ten sisters are all beloved because of some sort of achievement or accomplishment.
  • At one point in the film, Angus and Morag reference the theme song:
Morag: "Crashing through the crowded halls, dodging girls like--"
Angus: "Ping-pong balls?"
Morag: "Just to reach the bathroom on time."
Angus: [chuckles] "That's rather catchy."
  • In the Season 5 episode "Rumor Has It", it was revealed that Lincoln's full name is Lincoln Albert Loud. Since the film is chronologically set between Seasons 4 and 5 (and most likely in production before Season 5), this would technically be the first piece of Loud House media to reveal this fact.

According to Dave the 1600s Louds after they left Scotland they Seattle in America in a place called Woods,Michigan that we know now it’s modern Royal woods 😎 #TheLoudhouseMovie ps yup he responded to my first question

Sep 13, 2021

  • According to Dave Needham, after the ancestors were banished from their kingdom by Aggie, they moved to an area in the land that would soon become Michigan called Woods. Sometime between the ancestors' arrival and the present, the area was renamed from Woods to Royal Woods.
  • Some of the seals on the island where Lela drops Morag have some facial features similar to that of the Loud family.
    • One seal has Lincoln's cowlick.
    • One seal has buckteeth with braces, similar to Luan.
    • One seal is missing its front teeth, similar to Lana and Lola.
    • One seal has Lisa's hairstyle and glasses.
  • Lisa's laser eye surgery from the episodes "Making the Grade" and "Potty Mouth" must've worn off sometime before the events of the film because during the battle, when Lisa tries to give Lola a high-five, she ends up slapping her in the face.
  • Flip can be seen wearing his season 1 shirt in the film.
  • Lincoln breaks the fourth wall by pushing the Loud Castle sequence out of the way and says to the camera, "No no, seriously; you need Ronnie Anne?"
  • Innuendo: When Lincoln explains he's "duke-ing" by going down the stairs in his duke outfit, the twins misinterpret his words by believing he would soil himself (as in "take a duke").
  • Irony:
    • At first glance, Lola spending her family's vacation money to keep her teeth shiny was nothing but an act of selfishness, but later on, it became a weapon for her to use during the fight with Morag.
    • Angus claims that the Duke's name was well-known, but the Duke's name is never spoken in the film.
    • All that mattered to Morag was deafening silence, so Lela proceeded to punish her by dumping her on an island full of noisy seals.
    • Morag believes that her ancestor, Aggie, had gotten rid of the Loud's ancestors from Loch Loud, but she'd end up having to deal with them anyway due to them being summoned by Lucy.
    • When Lynn Sr. tells Rita to steer the ship starboard (to the right), he claims not to know what it means when asked about it, but it turns out that Rita actually steered the ship starboard while making a U-turn.

Development[]

On March 28, 2017, Paramount Pictures' president Marc Evans announced a film based on the series originally set for a theatrical release on February 7, 2020.[5] However, in January 2019, Paramount removed the film from their schedule.[6] On February 5, 2019, it was announced that the film would instead be produced for release on Netflix.[7][8][9]

Paramount president Marc Evans announced that, during Comic-Con, the studio will work closely with Viacom's TV brands, most notably Nickelodeon, which includes this movie.[5] When the film was first announced at Comic-Con 2017, series creator Chris Savino stated that the film would be non-canon to the show. Dave Needham later contradicted Savino's claim stating that it is canon since Lily is still in her diaper appearance. In a later interview on the Nerds Social Club Podcast, Needham states that this film takes place during the summer somewhere between "Coupe Dreams" and "Schooled!"[10]

Savino had no involvement on the film after being fired from the show due to sexual harassment allegations back in October 2017.[11] In January 2021, it was announced that the film would be part of Netflix's 2021 film lineup.[12][13] The film's cast and crew were revealed in April 2021, confirming the entire main cast will be reprising their roles from the show, including new members such as David Tennant, Billy Boyd, and Michelle Gomez.[14]

Animation and visual effects[]

The film, like the series, was produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California.

As with the television series, along with its spin-off show and The Loud House: The First Movie, the film combines traditional animation and used computer-generated imagery (CGI), which handled by Burbank's animation studio Nickelodeon Digital Animation Studios from The Fairly OddParents and Invader Zim. The backgrounds were hand-painted initially then scanned in and digitally enhanced using Adobe Photoshop and Ernest Chan, Donny Sorvala, Tim Pyle, Hanzhi Tang, Pablo Smith, Bakah Baik, Tyler Mele, Kenneth Janeski, Andrea Yomtob, Christian Evans and Russell Davis at Nickelodeon Animation Studios used simple 3D modeling in Newtek's LightWave 3D as to determine camera locations, lens, angles, rough lighting, character, and prop placement, and which way the characters would be looking and expressing while the composition crew used Toon Boom and the background paint was done in Adobe Photoshop. The pre-visualization crew were able to use the 3D backdrops, which became more detailed throughout the film's development, to integrate the 3D character models and test the Toon Boom animations on top of these scenes using the placement established by Newtek's LightWave 3D.

The Loud House Movie contains the Robot Chicken-style stop-motion sequence for the battle with Lincoln vs. Morag that was animated by Screen Novelties and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios; the company had previously produced a clay animation scene for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. The animators at Screen Novelties designed the characters of the Loud family, Lela the Dragon, Morag and Angus as they were used as Robot Chicken-esque modified action figures.

Sound and Music[]

The post-production sound services were provided by Advantage Audio, Inc. and Boom Box Post. Robert Duran, the sound designer from The Fairly OddParents, Robert Poole II, the sound editor from Phineas and Ferb, Jeff Shiffman and Tess Fouriner, the sound editors from The Loud House and its spin-off series.

The film's music score was composed by Doug Rockwell, who composes the score for the television series, with Jonathan Hylander serves as music editor. The film's soundtrack was released on the same day the film was released, August 20. The themes by Christopher Lennertz and the official music by Phillip White, it features many songs sung by Oh, Hush!, graywolfe, Distant Cousins and Tide Lines.[15] The film's entire soundtrack is available on Spotify and from other popular MOD-providers.

The Loud House Movie was originally scheduled for a theatrical release of February 7, 2020, however, in January 2019, Paramount Pictures removed it off their release calendar.[6] On February 5, 2019, Viacom's CEO Bob Bakish announced that instead of the theatrical release by Paramount Pictures the film would instead be released on the streaming service Netflix.[8] This news was later confirmed by an official statement by Netflix announcing a "multi-year deal between Netflix and Nickelodeon" in November 2019.[16] In April 2021, Netflix announced via teaser trailer that the movie would be released during the summer of 2021.[14] In July 2021, Netflix announced via a trailer that the final release date for the film had been set for August 20, 2021.[17]

Reception[]

The Loud House Movie was met with mixed to positive reviews from critics.[18][19][20][21] Bob Hoose from Focus on the Family's pluggedin.com gave a positive review for the movie saying that "The Loud House Movie is a nicely balanced musical that somehow gives all of the kids—with their distinctive personalities and quirks—a moment to shine. All the while, it also delivers a rollicking, giggle-packed tale of castles, dragons and backstabbing caretakers".[22] Common Sense Media's review published on The Washington Post noted that parents should "expect some name-calling like 'loser' and 'stinkin' Lincoln'," but noted that, "overall this is a funny, heartwarming story that the whole family can enjoy".[23]
