The Sesame Street Movie is an upcoming 2025 musical comedy adventure family film written and directed by Jonathan Krisel, based on the long-running PBS and Max children's television series of the same name. It stars Anne Hathaway along with the original cast of Sesame Street Muppets. It serves as a stand-alone sequel to The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999) and Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird (1985), the latter of which was also released by Warner Bros. Pictures. Synopsis[]

Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends are mysteriously expelled from their neighborhood, finding themselves in Manhattan. They team up with a plucky history show host Sally Hawthorne (Anne Hathaway) who's on a quest to save her show and prove that Sesame Street actually exists, with obstacles created by the "evil" Mayor, with reasons of his own for keeping Sesame Street hidden from the world.

Plot[]

The movie begins with Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends being mysteriously expelled from their neighborhood. They then find themselves in Manhattan, where they meet the plucky history show host Sally Hawthorne. Sally is on a mission to save her show and prove that Sesame Street actually exists, but the evil Mayor has other plans. He is determined to keep Sesame Street hidden from the world for reasons of his own.

Sally and the Sesame Street gang must find a way to prove that Sesame Street exists and save Sally's show. Along the way, they must face a series of obstacles created by the Mayor while also discovering the t

rue reason why he wants to keep Sesame Street hidden. As they work together to overcome these obstacles, they find that Sesame Street has a special power hidden within it that could save not only Sally's show, but also the entire city of Manhattan.

Production[]

In 2016, it was announced that David Guion and Michael Handelman had been set to co-write the screenplay treatment for the film for. Shawn Levy of 21 Laps Entertainment, Michael Aguilar and Guymon Casady and Daniel Rappaport of Entertainment 360 would produce, alongside Sesame Workshop.[1] In September 2018, Jonathan Krisel signed on to direct the film, with the screenplay by Chris Galletta and Mike Rosolio.[2] In December 2018, Anne Hathaway signed on to star in the film. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer would co-finance the film with Warner Bros. Pictures.[3] In June 2019, it was reported that Bo Burnham would write original songs for the film.[4] In March 2020, Chance the Rapper was added to the cast.[5]

Filming was originally scheduled to begin in July 2019, but due to Anne Hathaway finishing up on The Witches, filming was delayed to April 2020.[6][7] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was delayed indefinitely.[8] In August 2021, Levy revealed that there were discussions taking place about whether to have the film stay theatrical or release on HBO Max.

In January 2023, when promoting the film Elieen. Anne Hathaway spoke at length about her commitment to the project by saying "It hasn't happened yet, I hope it does." [1]

In 2025, it was reported by iMDB that Anne Hathaway dropped out of the movie.[2]
