Thomas and the Magic Railroad is a 2019 British-American live-action/computer-animated children's fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis and Britt Allcroft. The film serves as a remake of the original 2000 film of the same name. The film stars Alec Baldwin reprising his role as Mr. Conductor, Ariel Winter, Owen Wilson, Nicolas Cage, and Joseph May as the voice of Thomas the Tank Engine in the US version with John Hasler voicing him in the UK version. Like the original 2000 film, the 2019 remake is based on the British children's book series The Railway Series by The Rev. W. Awdry, its televised adaptation Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends, and the American television series Shining Time Station by Britt Allcroft and Rick Siggelkow.
The film was produced by ImageMovers, Mattel Films, Legendary Entertainment, and the Isle of Man Film Commission and distributed by Universal Pictures in North America and Warner Bros. Pictures in international markets. The film tells the story of Lily Stone, the granddaughter of Burnett Stone, who is the caretaker of Lady, an enchanted steam engine who is lacking an appropriate supply of coal, and Mr. Conductor of Shining Time Station, whose provisions of magical gold dust are at a critical low. To ameliorate these problems, Lily and Mr. Conductor enlist the help of Thomas, who confronts Burnett's arch-nemesis P.T. Boomer, who plans to destroy Lady and the Magic Railroad, and the ruthless and devious Diesel 10, who plans to get rid of steam engines in the Island of Sodor along the way.
The film was released on September 20, 2019, and received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the CGI animation for the trains, the performances, and the visual effects but criticized the story and the addition of P.T. Boomer, a character who did not appear in the original 2000 film. It grossed $524 million worldwide against a production budget of $64 million.
This film is dedicated to the memory of Russell Means, Doug Lennox, and Peter Fonda, who were the original actors for Billy Twofeathers, P.T. Boomer, and Burnett Stone respectively.
