Tom the Hand 4 is a 2020 American live-action/computer-animated action adventure film based on works of its same name by Ted V. Miller and Tom H. Zwick. It was released by Warner Bros. Pictures and produced by Movie Land Animation Studios, Legendary Entertainment, Village Roadshow Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, Walden Media, Perfect World Pictures and Nelvana Limited. It was the first Tom the Hand installment to be produced with Movie Land Animation Studios and the fourth installment of the Tom the Hand film franchise. The film stars Ted V. Miller, Seth MacFarlane, Ben Zwick, Will Ferrell, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Lizzie Waterworth, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Josh Gad, Jamie Chung, Jon Lee, Ryan Potter, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jack Black. It was also the last installment to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures before the franchise will be moved to Sony Pictures. The film was also directed by Pascal Pinon and Thierry Sapyn, from the screenplay by James Bobin and Steven T. Seagle and story by Peter Lord.
Tom the Hand 4 is scheduled to be simultaneously released theatrically in North America by Warner Bros. Pictures in Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D and IMAX, and digitally on HBO Max and video on demand on December 25, 2020, after being released theatrically in international markets that don't have HBO Max on December 16. A major critical and commercial success, the film grossed $292.6 million worldwide against its $50 million budget, and received high praise for its visual effects, performances of its cast, humor, the screenplay, and production design. The film was nominated for the Movie Land Fun and Excitement Award for Best Animated Feature in 2020, but lost to Over the Moon.
The sequel, Tom the Hand 5, is scheduled to be released on December 24, 2021, by Sony Pictures Releasing, although the previous installments was mainly a commercial success.
Plot[]
Several months after three villains were defeated, Tom, Mark, the birds and the animals were celebrating Dylan's 16th birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic. In St. John, Indiana, Equals thinks the Robert's friend, Kyle the Turkey will be sent to his iguana house in Beijing, but it's not about going to Beijing, China since he's trying to kidnap Kyle and puts him in the box where he belong.

Tom the Hand 4 was in development and the fourth installment of Tom the Hand film will be announced and in development by Ted V. Miller. It was announced that the fourth film will be co-produced with Movie Land Animation Studios, which is not involved in the first three films. On December 13, 2018 it was announced that RatPac-Dune Entertainment will not be involving in the fourth film due to the studio's shut down in April 2018. On August 13, 2019 it was announced that Amblin Entertainment will replace RatPac-Dune Entertainment, known for their fourth collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures on Ready Player One.

In September 2018, Ted V. Miller, Seth MacFarlane, Ben Zwick, Will Ferrell, Bill Hader and Andy Samberg confirmed to return as the characters. On February 28, 2019, it was reported that Josh Gad will voice as Olaf the Snowman. On June 13, Sapyn confirmed the return of Ryan Potter and Jack Black via Twitter. On June 17, Jon Lee announced to replace Charlie Miller as Paddington Bear.
Filming[]
Principal photography has begun on November 6, 2018 and ended on June 12, 2019. Filming on the next two sequels will begin after wrapping the post-production on first two sequels.
Visual effects and CGI animation[]
Visual effects and animation were created by Moving Picture Company (MPC), Movie Land Digital Production Services (MLDPS), Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and The Bellas VFX Studios, who created a realistic version of the stuffed animals, creatures, plush toys and talking hands using computer animation. Rob Bredow served as the overall visual effects supervisor for the film.
Music[]
In 2019, Henry Jackman has returned to serve as a film score composer with newcomers, Tom Holkenborg, Lorne Balfe, Rupert Gregson-Williams and BTS. The film soundtrack will be available on December 18, 2020 by WaterTower Music.
Release[]
Tom the Hand 4 was first released in China on December 16, 2020 and it was scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States and Canada on December 25, 2020 in Dolby Cinema and IMAX while streaming on HBO Max the same day. It was originally announced for release on November 27, 2020, then it was delayed to December 25, 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Later, Variety reported the film would be keeping its Christmas release date in theaters, while the film would also premiere digitally on HBO Max in North America the same day, with the film being available at no extra cost to subscribers, after premiering in international theatrical markets who don't have HBO Max starting from on December 16.
On December 2, 2020, Tom the Hand 4 would also premiere digitally to rent via video on demand in North America the same day.
Marketing[]
A teaser poster debuted on October 25, 2019, one year ahead of the film's then-scheduled release date. On February 9, 2020, it was announced that the film's first trailer would debut during the 92nd Academy Awards. By the end of the month, WarnerMedia Entertainment debuted new footage from the film during the HBO Max presentation to the press. The first trailer debuted on July 31, 2020 right before the movie theater's reopening, with the show being livestreamed on Twitter around the world in real time. In September 2020, the film's second trailer was released exclusively in the theatrical release before Tenet, where theaters were already reopened, until it was marked as a home video release.
Home media[]
Tom the Hand 4 was released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to "own" on the digital download platform on March 23, 2021 and on DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and 4K Ultra HD on April 6, 2021. The film was re-added to HBO Max following its premiere on HBO's linear channel on June 4, 2021.

Tom the Hand 5 grossed $137.2 million in the United States and $155.4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $292.6 million, against a production budget of $50 million. Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit of the film to be $130 million, when factoring together all expenses and revenues. It became the second animated film released during the COVID-19 pandemic and the second family film to break the $200 million mark.
In North America, Tom the Hand 5 was released alongside Wonder Woman 1984, News of the World, Promising Young Woman and Pinocchio and was projected to gross around $20 million from 2,150 theaters in its opening weekend. During the pandemic, it increase 20.5% on its second weekend. On December 26, 2020, on its third weekend, the film grossed $25.7 million in its fourth weekend, finishing second. On its fifth weekend, Tom the Hand 5 broke Wonder Woman 1984's box-office records, grossing $63.9 million and increasing 59.9% on its final weekend.
Critical responses[]
Based on 120 professional critic reviews, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 90% of those reviews were positive, with an average rating of 8.59/10. Using a weighted average calculator, Metacritic assigned the film a score of 70 out of 100, based on 90 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.

Future[]

On January 31, 2021, it was announced to develop Tom the Hand 5 during the COVID-19 pandemic. All the cast were reprised roles to voice the hands, creatures, pets and animals. Due to Warner Bros. losing the JH Movie Collection film rights to keep the studio, it was announced that Sony Pictures Animation entered early negotiations to distribute upcoming feature film properties based on The JH Movie Collection Show. The deal with SPA was set for a limited 5 year film deal with Warner Bros. still owning the previous films. The fifth film is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2021 in select wide theatrical theaters in the United States by Sony Pictures Releasing via its Columbia Pictures label.
